HEART WIN UNDER 13 GIRLS STATE CHAMPIONSHIP

May 17, 2008 - The Heart finished off an extremely successful Under 13 season of soccer by capturing the Pennsylvania outdoor state cup championship. In a six-round tournament that began in the first week of April, the Heart defeated a series of the top premier soccer teams in the state to claim the state championship. The final game was a tightly contested 1-0 win against a talented Montgomery United team. Both teams fought hard for the state crown in the championship game but a second half finish in front of the Montgomery net by Kayla Cunningham coupled with unrelenting team defense for the full seventy minute game proved to be the difference.

The victory marked the first outdoor state championship by a girls team in the history of the Lower Merion Soccer Club. It also culminated as successful a season as a soccer team in the region could have. The fall season finished with a championship in the Philadelphia Area Girls Soccer Premier Soccer League that included state champions from Maryland and Delaware along with the top teams in Pennsylvania. In the winter, the team also played up a year competing in the u14 indoor state cup, reaching the championship game of that tournament before losing in the finals to a talented u14 premier team from Lower Dauphin PA.

For a year marked by considerable development in the players’ games and remarkable accomplishments by the team, congratulations to all of the players from this year’s LMSC Heart state championship team: Julianna Bradley, Elaine Byerly, Kayla Cunningham, Kiersten Daly, Caleigh Foust, Carly Ichniowski, Sophie Katz, Samara Kitnick, Moira Petrie, Paige Phillips, Nanci Selig, Alex Srolis, Salina Williford, Martha Zeller, and Mary Grace Zeller. The team is now preparing to represent the state in the Region One Soccer Tournament in Maine during the last week of June where state champions from West Virginia to Maine compete for the regional championship.
